Book Club: The Murmur House, A Murmuration of Frolicking Young Writers.

Murmur
Looking through the personal blogs and indie zines, Indonesia sepertinya telah memiliki regenerasi penulis mudanya sendiri secara natural. Klub membaca adalah rencana mereka selanjutnya, namun untuk sekarang let’s have some chat with these two charming young ladies.

Hi Rain and Avi, how are you?
Rain: We met one afternoon for tea and to talk about our two favorite things, love and literature. Somewhere amongst that, had an idea of creating a project that made by young writers for young writers.
Avi: It was December last year. Rain happened to be in my campus, waiting for her friend to finish some errands and I happened to be a little frustrated from writing my final paper. So we kept each other company and talked about boys and books. It was really fun, and so before we parted that day we thought how wonderful it’d be if we could share the warmth with more people with passion alike.

What’s the story behind the name?
Rain: There are two meanings behind our name. The first, “murmur” means “to speak softly”. The second, “murmuration” means the migration of a flock of starlings that are synchronous and constant.

What’s the main idea when you start this project?
Rain: We wanted to create a home for young writers to gather and grow with each other through a collaborative literary journal. We also hope to foster our home by hosting events such as Murmuration (the launch of each literary journal), and soon, reading clubs.
Avi: idem!

Apa pengalaman menyenangkan saat kalian menyusun Murmur edisi pertama?
Rain: It was exciting to see the participation of writers and to know that we were all interacting in the hopes of creating something beautiful together.

Rain: Our editorial team discusses each piece and goes through a process of workshopping the pieces with the writers and translators.

How about the Murmuration? Tell me about it, kalian baru saja menggelar Murmuration pertama, how does it go?
Rain: The first Murmuration was quite full and there were a lot of enthusiastic performers, both who are part of Murmur and impromptu ones. It was heartening to find that there is a large amount of enthusiasm for literature.
But everyone seemed to be having a good time! (At least I was.)

Have you guys thinking to go online as well?
Rain: There’s a lot of perks in having online content and we have thought of doing so. We are trying to publish the literary journal in print because we love the feel of a physical copy.
Avi: Setuju sama Rain.

Do you have any favorite figure from literature scene?
Rain: From Indonesia, my mother, Leila Chudori. From outside of Indonesia, Sylvia Plath.
Avi: This is one tough question. Kalau penulis Indonesia, Umar Kayam deh. Penulis luar negeri sekarang lagi suka sama Alissa Nutting, cuz Tampa is hilarious.

What literature means for both of you?
Rain: A pure attempt to live.
Avi: I know it won’t save the world, but it might just enlighten its people. Or at least move some hearts.

Rain: We see a lot of developing young writers, but as young writers ourselves, there is not a lot of outlet for us, especially for fiction writers. This can be quite dispiriting. We hope that The Murmur House can be one, out of many, places where young writers can bloom.
Avi: Nah, iya gitu. Makanya kita bangun The Murmur House, biar nggak saling terpencar dan kesepian.

Spoil some secret for your second issue, what’s the theme dan bagaimana caranya bisa berkontribusi?
Rain: The theme is “Love and Other Drugs”. We intend to find short stories, poetry, proses, plays, and essays on addiction.

What’s the next plan for Murmur House?
Rain: We hope to continue publishing our literary journal and launching them in our Murmurations. We also hope to establish a reading club that will meet and discuss books once in every two-three months.
Avi: More gatherings! We’d love to make a habit out of reading aloud in public!
