Art Talk: The Pink And Blue of Fran Munyoz

Hailed from Valencia, Spain, artist Fran Munyoz paints about boys and girls in their undies, looking fragile and sensual at the same time, in vibrant pastel landscape of predominantly pink and blue palette. It was love at the first sight when I accidentally saw his works in my Instagram feeds. Just mere minutes after I instantly click the follow button and liking so many posts, I decide to drop him a message for interview request, and here it is. The 22-year-old artist tells about his life in Valencia, his artistic process, and the captivating characters that appear in his work.

Hi Fran, when did you start focusing making art? Did you come from creative/artistic family?

I’ve been painting, drawing, and sculpting since I was young, but it’s only around from these past two years, I am focus on creating personal works. No one from my family is an artist. I have learnt Fine Arts at the Polytechnic University of Valencia for two years. In addition, I’m also joining personal classes to develop my skills.

What do you love the most about your hometown and how does it affect your art?

I really like how calm it is, it’s close to the sea and at the same time it’s also around mountains. I used to focusing in body shapes; nevertheless I also have included landscapes in my latest series to generate different backgrounds.

Who are your favorite artists?

My favorite artists are Antonio López, Hopper, Matisse, and Dalí.

What kind of mediums do you use?

I used to work with mix and collage technique. Both of them are dynamic and they increase the dimension of the work. But actually what I’m really like is to combine drawing and painting.

Tell us a little about your creative process.

I am working so hard constantly, and especially after I decided to do what I love and I mixed it with my essence. I choose the colors depend of the situation or series. I like planning all the works with a coherent theme and stay true to the meaning that I want to transmit through my works.

What the other thing beside art that makes you passionate?

I am passionate about human, trying to get know more from the people, understanding different perspective and know how they feel.

What makes you nostalgic?

Thinking about life itself makes me nostalgic, and especially to think about the ones that aren’t with me anymore.

How do you define “beauty”?

I think during XXI Century the concept of “Beauty” shouldn’t be explained because it’s wide, relative, and very depends on who is looking at it.

What was the last thing you read, watched, and listened to?

The last book I have read was Art After Modernism from Brian Wallis. Last film I have seen is Edward Scissorhands from Tim Burton, and last song I have listened is “Til It Happens to You” from Lady Gaga.

What are your current and upcoming projects?

Nowadays I am working on some commission works, a new video art project and some exhibitions. There’s an individual exhibition which will be held in Madrid and a collective exhibition in Malaga.
